The current Phi Eta Sigma officers lined the stage as Dr. Settle, who is the adviser for the Shawnee chapter, began the ceremony. Historian, Joshua Days shared background information about Phi Eta Sigma which was founded in 1923 at the University of Illinois. SSU is the 315th chapter, established in 1996.
Melissa LeMaster, chapter president, then introduced the attributes of a Phi Eta Sigma member: discipline of the mind, discipline of the body, and the character. Officers Matt Lonsinger, Kristin Wilson and Amy Montavon spoke on the mind, body and character, respectively.
LeMaster asked candidates if they accepted those qualities, each responding with, "I will."
The words Phi Eta Sigma translate as "lovers of wisdom."
Members were then called to sign the membership book and receive a certificate. Once all students were inducted, staff inductees Daniel Chaffin, Chris Meade, and Sharon Messer were honored.
Settle concluded the ceremony by introducing the new inductees to the community.
