The Shawnee State Golf Team struggled against three stronger performers as well as Mother Nature in an environment the coached termed "ridiculous" during the Capital Purple and White Invitational April 3 in Columbus.

For the Invitational the Bears finished in fourth place out of eight teams with a team score of 662. Shawnee finished 27 strokes behind Madonna University, who won the event with a team score of 635. Ohio Northern finished second with a team score of 645, while Mount Vernon finished third after posting a score of 651.

"On Friday, we battled 45-mile-an-hour wind and rain," said Coach Roger Merb. "This makes spring golf ridiculous because we are always battling the elements, unlike in the fall."

On Friday, the Bears as a team shot a 344, and were in seventh place going into Saturday.

"In the second round, there was only one team that beat us and they won the tournament," Merb said. "Madonna University shot five strokes better, but had a much better first round than us."

Madonna University shot a first round 322 and was in second place going into Saturday, trailing only Ohio Northern, who shot a 319. At this point Shawnee trailed by 25 strokes, but added to that deficit after the Madonna University's second round 313.

"You can't pick one thing to work on for the next tournament," Merb said. "Golf doesn't work that way. We're playing against some good players, so we need to play great all the time."

Sophomore Bryan Spille led the Bears with an overall finish of fourth place, as he shot 156 (80+76) on the two days. Cody Robbins posted a score of 168 (89+79), while R.D. Erwin and Charlie Cooper each shot 170. Isaiah Keller rounded out the scoring for the Bears as he shot 173 at the invitational.

Heidelberg's Zack Koinis earned medallist honors as he shot 153 (76+77) at the event.
