The Shawnee State Club Roller Hockey team kicked off their season with a bang, going 3-0-1 Nov. 7-8 in Columbus. The team, in its third season, competes in the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA) where it holds conference affiliation in the Midwest Collegiate Roller Hockey League (MCRHL).
The weekend began when SSU faced off against North Central College (Ill.), a team that is led by the play of goaltender Pat Nebl. For the first two periods in the contest the Bears offense was "Nebl'd" as 34 of the Bears 35 shots were turned away and NCC held a 2-1 lead.
In the third however, the Bears got their struggles on the scoreboard turned around as last year's NCRHA point's leader Josh Sammons added two goals and three assists to lead the Bears to a 6-3 come-from-behind win.
In the second game of the day against Tiffin University no comeback was needed as the Bears controlled the game from beginning to end and won convincingly 22-1. In the game, Sammons had four goals 10 assists while freshman Zac Marrone added five goals and three assists for SSU.
The Bears now lead the all-time series with Tiffin 6-0, their most wins against any opponent.
Sunday brought SSU their first big challenges of the season as they squared off against two NCAA Division 1 opponents in the University of Michigan and the University of Cincinnati.
Against Michigan, a team that defeated the Bears 9-6 last year, SSU fell behind after the first period 2-0 and 3-2 after two periods to set up a very exciting third period. It was back and forth all throughout the third period as the teams traded goals.
Kevin Fischer's' shorthanded goal followed by his version of the "stanky leg" celebration would provide a spark to the Bears in the period. However, SSU took a major blow when one of their top scorers received a game misconduct for boarding with only six minutes remaining in the contest.
All appeared to be done for the Bears as they gave up a goal to the Wolverines to fall behind 5-4 with only 1:53 left. However, SSU would get the tying goal only 22 seconds later when a shot went in off the post to give the Bears a 5-5 tie with Michigan. The game was even as each team would record 30 shots.
Shawnee State closed out the weekend with their first ever regular season contest against the Cincinnati Bearcats, a physical team with plenty of talent.
Josh Sammons, playing against friends and former club teammates, made sure SSU took home the victory as he finished with seven goals and two assists as the Bears skated past the Bearcats 9-2. Solid in net for the Bears was senior goalie Matt Payton who stopped 23 of 25 shots, including a penalty shot as the Bears got off to the best start in the team's short history.
