Early in the evening Friday, Jan. 29, this reporter was at Silver Palace, a Chinese restaurant on the corner of Gallia and Kendall streets in Portsmouth, when I heard a loud noise.

One of the waitresses said that her first thought was that a gun being fired was the source of the sound, but in reality it was an automobile hitting the east wall of the building.

Martin Heatherly, the driver of the vehicle said, "I was pulling in and my foot slipped off of the brake and hit the accelerator."

Joseph Adkins, a customer inside the restaurant at the time, said "I was sitting at the table when I heard a loud bang. I looked up and a car had rammed into the wall."

Police Lieutenant Brewer said a call was placed to the Portsmouth Police Department at 5:54 p.m. Brewer and two ambulances arrived within minutes of the accident.

Two people who were sitting at the booth against the east wall were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The bottom of the wall is caved in, including the outside bricks and the floor tiles inside the dining area. In addition, there is a crack in the glass window above this wall and a dining booth was knocked loose from its attached place on the floor.

Shirly Jackson, a waitress at the restaurant said, "I have worked here for 16 years and have never seen something like this before."

Jackson could not comment on the cost of the damage or when it might be repaired.
